The FuseBox residencies support digital entrepreneurs, tech visionaries and creative technologists who want to turn their ideas into successful innovations.
We work with our residents supporting their projects and connecting them to each other and further opportunities. Here is a run through of some of their developments and events they took part in this month…
New Starters
Steve Huckle
Currently completing a Ph.D. in blockchain technologies in the School of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Sussex. Steve’s focus is primarily technical – during the course of his PhD, he has created three blockchain-based web applications. Steve is working in the FuseBox to develop his practice and also widen his understanding of the ethical, social, political and economic impact of technology.
Maf’j Alvarez
Digital Media Artist and User Experience Designer Maf’j Alvarez makes a welcome return to the FuseBox to focus on her company Root Interactive which provides interdisciplinary research and development of innovative immersive reality experiences in the arts. During her second residency, Maf’j is setting out to explore and develop strategies for sustainable digital arts practice.
Announcements
Wonderland X has officially been released! The project is a VR 180° series directed by Katie Stokes and produced by Sarah Ticho exploring mental wellbeing and our perception of reality. It was supported by YouTube VR Labs and VRScout. Watch the series here.
Sophie Dixon and ed Silverton, Mnemoscene are excited to announce that their Nomad (nomad-project.co.uk) has been selected by Nesta for their Amplified programme. They are looking forward to working with Nesta and All Change over a twelve month period to develop the project further. Find out more here.
Good news from immersive ‘Warbells’ project that residents Maf’j Alvarez and Andy Baker delivered last year has been officially running for 3 months in Vorarlberg Museum, Austria – which has gathered over 16000 visitors during that period.

Events
In April we organised VR Meetup that explored the advancement that multi-user experiences bring to immersive technology that many of our residents attended to listen to local companies Make real and Future Visual speak at.
We also provided a breakout session for Innovate UK Innovate South East event. Showcasing the Brighton Immersive Lab and providing demos by residents Maf’j Alvarez, Andy Baker, Nmemoscene and Body Rocket all ran demos for the event.
Plus resident Declan Cassidy, Into Games ran an event to offer the opportunities within the immersive sector for local game students that featured talks by fellow residents Sarah Ticho, Hatsumi VR and Jack Maddalena, VRCraftworks

Ideas and Developments
Co-Founder of Virtual Umbrella Bertie Millis has been continuing their work marketing events and consultancy for people working in immersive. Bertie has announced he his starting up another side company, called Steine (it’s pronounced Steen) – going to do touring and distribution for immersive products. Find out more here.
On top of her involvement with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Magic Leap fellowship programme, resident Gillian Spragg recently took part in the Grenfell silent march which has moved Gillian to start thinking about ways art could help support and raise awareness for the people affected by Grenfell.
